Today mark’s the McGinnity Family Foundation’s first “Forward Friday” which is an opportunity for us to celebrate the ways our grantees are advancing their communities.  Look for more amazing stories of the work of our current and previous grantees on the fourth Friday of every month.
SASANE is an organization established by 7 former female human trafficking survivors in Nepal with the mission to end any form of violence to women by ensuring empowerment of the survivors. In early Spring of 2020, Jeny Pokharel and her team at SASANE recognized a significant increase in domestic abuse in their community resulting from the pandemic lockdown. They worked quickly to create an easier process for victims of domestic violence to report their cases. They hired 23 young survivors of domestic abuse to serve as help line staff who handled victims with care and worked quickly to get incidents reports to the police which historically hasn’t been easy.
Through the process, helpline staff experienced extensive training and job skill development and several have gone on to paid positions as legal or case assistants with governmental organizations and police departments. Jeny and her team have been recognized by the Nepalese Government, the National Human Rights Commission and Child Helpline Service in Nepal both for their astounding efforts and to assist with data sharing. SASANE hopes to scale the program to include sensitivity training for government officials and police officers handling delicate situations of domestic violence. We are thrilled to take this opportunity to thank Jeny and her team for their efforts in advancing their community. You give us hope.
